2025 Federal Income Tax Brackets — Single

What This Calculator Does and Doesn't Cover

An estimate, not tax advice

This calculator provides a simplified estimate for planning purposes only. It does not account for every provision that may apply to your situation, and it is not a substitute for professional guidance. Talk with Alumbra CPA about your specific facts.

  • Your marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar of income. Your effective rate is the total tax divided by your income — almost always the lower number.
  • Self-employment income carries both income tax and self-employment tax. Half of the self-employment tax is deducted in arriving at adjusted gross income.
  • Social Security tax applies only up to the annual wage base. Medicare has no cap, and an additional 0.9% applies above higher income thresholds.
  • Credits reduce tax directly, while deductions reduce the income that gets taxed. A credit is generally worth more per dollar than a deduction.
  • Not included here: capital gains rates, the qualified business income deduction, alternative minimum tax, the Net Investment Income Tax, phase-outs, and credit eligibility rules.
  • State tax is a flat estimate. Real state calculations have their own brackets, deductions, and rules that vary widely.
